New Forklift Category Changes – What You Need to Know (2026)
From January 2026, the Accrediting Bodies Association (ABA) introduced updated lift truck category classifications across the UK.
These changes aim to simplify categories and better reflect modern workplace equipment.
Some of the key updates affecting warehouse operators include:
- Reach & Straddle Trucks: Previous D1 and D2 categories have merged into a single D1 category.
- Low-Level Order Pickers (LLOP): Moving from A2 to a new E0 category within the Order Picker group.
- Pedestrian Operated Stacker Trucks: A new M4 category has been introduced.
- Vertical Stock Pickers: A new SP1 category has been created specifically for this equipment.
- Telehandlers: Category structure has been revised: J2 merges into J3, J4 into J5, and J6 into J7.
The good news is that existing operator certificates remain valid, so qualified operators can continue operating the equipment they were trained on. Future training and certification will simply be recorded under the new category structure.
If you’re unsure how these changes affect your operators, training records, or future courses, Central Training is happy to help.
